Salzmann was commissioned in 1853 by Félix de Saulcy in order to resolve an academic argument concerning ruins in Palestine. The photographer's prints from paper negatives were printed by Blanquart-Evrard utilising his developing-out process and published in a now very rare volume by Gide & Baudry in 1856. From the beginning, observers noted 'un caractére tout particulier' and today's curators and collectors are still struck with the apparent modernism of Salzmann's style.
